“What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?”
This question, at the heart of Laudato Si’, Laudato Si’, challenges us to think deeply about our responsibility to the planet and to future generations. It reminds us that the earth—our common home—is something we all share, and something we are all called to protect.
At Viatores Christi (VC), sustainability is not a standalone initiative—it is embedded across all areas of our work. We take a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, recognising the connection between people, communities, and the natural world. This commitment is reflected in our current strategy, where environmental awareness and action are integrated throughout our programmes and partnerships.
Turning Commitment into Action
A key example of this in practice is the AVCA (Amplifying the Voice for Climate Action) project under the European Solidarity Corps Humanitarian Aid programme.
Led by VC in partnership with organisations in Italy and Germany, the project will support 31 volunteers working in Uganda, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Guatemala between 2026 and 2027.
AVCA focuses on real and urgent challenges. Across these regions, communities are already experiencing the impacts of climate change—unpredictable weather patterns, prolonged drought, environmental degradation, and increasing pressure on livelihoods and natural resources.
Through community-based initiatives, the project supports environmental education, conservation, and sustainable development practices. The aim is not only to respond to immediate challenges, but to strengthen long-term resilience and promote climate justice.
Learning Through Experience
Volunteers are central to this work. By engaging directly with local communities, they gain first-hand experience of environmental challenges and the realities of climate change.
Equally important is what they learn from the communities themselves—local knowledge, adaptive practices, and resilience in the face of change. This exchange creates a meaningful learning experience that extends beyond the placement, enabling volunteers to become advocates for environmental awareness when they return home.
In Uganda, volunteers will work with local partners including the Justice and Peace Commission in Hoima and the Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project, supporting initiatives that link conservation with community wellbeing.
Supporting Local Leadership
VC’s environmental commitment is further strengthened through partnerships supported by Misean Cara, whose strategy prioritises climate action and community resilience.
This support is already making an impact. In 2024, the Justice and Peace Commission in Hoima received recognition in the Misean Cara Climate Action Awards, highlighting the strength of locally led environmental initiatives.

Small Actions, Lasting Impact
Sustainability is also reflected in the everyday actions of VC’s partners. Since 2025, partners have been encouraged to mark Africa Environment and Wangari Maathai Day on March 3rd.
Communities prepare in advance, organising activities such as tree planting, local clean-ups, and awareness campaigns. These initiatives highlight how collective action—no matter how small—can contribute to meaningful environmental change.
They also honour the legacy of Wangari Maathai, whose work continues to inspire global environmental movements.
Looking Ahead
VC will continue to build on these efforts, working with partners who are at the forefront of environmental education and sustainable development.
Because protecting our common home is not just an environmental issue—it is about justice, dignity, and the future we are shaping together.
