VC supports education, health and livelihoods programmes in Uganda and Haiti. Our ESC volunteering programme operates in Uganda and South America.

VC's Member Managed Grant Programme

Operating in Uganda Cambodia and Haiti 2024-2027

In 2023 VC's key funder, Misean Cara introduced a new Member Managed Grant (MMG) programme to its member-base moving from individual project support to a multiannual multi-project programme support.  VC was one of the first phase applicants in this initiative incorporating its existing partner base (14 partners) into the MMG. The aim  is to give increased predictability control and flexibility to VC, an organisation that has demonstrated strong systems and procedures in key areas as assessed through an independent Organisational Capacity Assessment (OCA) process. The grant provides greater flexibility but at the same time requires VC to ensure strong oversight monitoring and ongoing evaluation systems are in place.

The MMG programme is in place till 2027 thereafter it is renewable for a further term.

Under the MMG, VC works in the following thematic areas;- livelihoods, education, human rights and health.

European Solidarity Corps Humanitarian Aid Volunteering

Volunteer opportunities for younger people in the 18-35 year age group

Since 2023 VC has engaged in the European Solidarity Corp Humanitarian Aid volunteer programme. This is aimed at the 18-35 age group.  Volunteers take part in projects that deliver needs‑based humanitarian assistance: preserving life, alleviating suffering, maintaining dignity, and helping disaster‑affected or vulnerable communities. Volunteers are recruited and trained by VC and its consortium partnerships for durations from 3 to 12 months.

The ESC provides opportunities for young people to contribute concretely in solidarity, especially in crises.  It also allows EU-based volunteers to acquire skills, competences, experience, which can help in their personal, educational, professional development.

In 2023 VC was a member of a consortium project called Humanitarian Aid for the Needs of Development (HAND) with the following agencies:

  • Egitim Programlari ve Evrensel ve Kulturel Aktiviteler Dernegi (EPEKA) – Turkey (lead partner)
  • Orissa State Volunteers and Social Workers Association (OSVSWA) – India
  • Bosnian Representative Association for Valuable Opportunities (BRAVO) – Bosnia and Herzegovina

VC Lay Missionary Programme

Specifically targetting the call to mission

The Viatores Christi Lay Mission Volunteer Programme is a faith-based international volunteer initiative. The programme trains and sends lay people to work in development and humanitarian projects overseas — especially in Africa, Latin America, and Asia — in partnership with local organisations.

It is rooted in Christian values such as solidarity, justice, dignity, and compassion — but it's not about proselytising. Instead, it focuses on sharing skills, building local capacity, and working alongside local communities.

Ideal candidates are:

Adults aged 21+

  • Skilled professionals (teachers, nurses, tradespeople, admin, youth workers, etc.)
  • Willing to live cross-culturally in often challenging environments
  • Open to or respectful of VC’s Catholic ethos
  • Looking for a meaningful, values-driven experience

Before going abroad, volunteers go through an in-depth training programme called Venture which is delivered over several weekends. It includes:

Cultural awareness and adaptation

Development and Mission

Project cycle management and many other specific courses aimed at supporting the volunteer in their placement. See training section. Viatores Christi’s lay mission programme embodies the core values of the Missionary Approach to Development*, to operate through justice, compassion, integrity, commitment and respect.

VC believes that longer term intervention is preferable to a short term approach. This is an understanding that change takes time and is an investment.

Other EU programmes

Justice, compassion, integrity, commitment and respect

Viatores Christi has actively persued EU programmes that have a direct coorelation to its strategy whether that by humanitarian volunteering, disability advocacy and or promotion of best practice or just general inclusion themed projects.  These have included EU ESC, EU ERASMUS EU Aid.
