VC Celebrates 65 years

Viatores Christi Marks 65 Years of Global Impact in International Development

This year, Viatores Christi (VC) celebrates 65 years of dedicated service in the international development sector, a milestone that speaks to the organisation’s enduring legacy, values-driven mission, and evolving vision for global justice and partnership.

Founded in 1960 with a strong focus on missionary work rooted in faith and social justice, Viatores Christi has grown into a dynamic organisation that supports long-term development through capacity-building, volunteer deployment, and development education. Over six decades, VC has worked alongside communities across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and beyond — forging deep partnerships and responding to the needs of a rapidly changing world.

“Our legacy is built on solidarity, service, and the belief in dignity for all,” said VC’s CEO Shane Halpin. “As we celebrate 65 years, we honour those who paved the way while looking ahead to new opportunities for justice, collaboration, and impact.”

Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

While VC has deep roots in faith-based volunteering, today’s organisation has adapted to encompass broader areas of international development, including climate justice, education, human rights, and livelihood support. The organisation now offers training and placement services for individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds, and continues to support partners across continents — with long-standing collaborations in Uganda, Haiti, and Cambodia.

These partnerships have led to impactful programmes — from education and empowerment projects in rural Uganda, to sustainable community development in Haiti, to health and advocacy initiatives with marginalised groups in Cambodia.

As part of its 65th anniversary celebrations, VC is also expanding its focus to build new strategic alliances with both Irish and international development organisations. “We recognise that today’s challenges — from climate breakdown to displacement — require shared solutions and deeper cooperation,” said Shane Halpin. “That’s why we’re focused on building bridges — between North and South, past and future, faith and action.”

Annual General Meeting – A Moment of Reflection and Vision

VC will host its Annual General Meeting this September in Dublin, offering a unique opportunity to showcase the work and stories of its global partners. The AGM will feature reflections from returned volunteers, updates from partner organisations in Uganda, Haiti, and Cambodia, and a forward-looking dialogue on VC’s evolving role in the development landscape.

“This event is more than a meeting — it’s a moment to come together, to celebrate resilience, and to recommit ourselves to justice and solidarity,” said Sally Roddy a Director on VC Council and Chair of its Membership Committee.

As VC marks 65 years of service, its journey stands as a testament to the power of compassionate action, community-driven change, and the courage to adapt while staying true to core values.
