Each year on 3rd December, communities around the world come together to mark the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)—a day dedicated to promoting the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day highlights the global call for inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities, while celebrating the invaluable contributions persons with disabilities make to society.
This year’s theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” echoes the powerful message of the global disability rights movement: “Nothing About Us Without Us.” It reminds us that true inclusion requires participation, representation, and the active involvement of persons with disabilities in shaping their own lives and communities.
How VC and Our Partners Are Celebrating IDPD 2025
At Viatores Christi (VC), we are proud to join our partners around the world in marking this important day through meaningful, community-based initiatives.
FOHO Uganda: Mobilising and Empowering PWDs
Our partner Foundation of Hope Uganda (FOHO) is preparing a vibrant, inclusive celebration. Their team plans to:
- Mobilise and bring together Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to actively participate in the day’s activities.
- Engage schools and organisations that work with PWDs to ensure that the event is fully inclusive and impactful.
FOHO’s efforts highlight the importance of community cohesion and visibility for persons with disabilities—ensuring they are not only included but are at the centre of the celebration.
BMCTI: Supporting Elderly Persons with Disabilities
The Bishop Magambo Counsellor Training Institute (BMCTI) works year-round with elderly community members, an estimated 30% of whom live with a disability. This year, BMCTI has dedicated the entire month of November to supporting elderly persons with disabilities.
Their activities include:
- Home visits offering psychosocial support
- Sharing vegetables from their community kitchen garden
- Listening to personal stories and providing companionship
- Running radio programmes to raise awareness around disability rights—
- 2nd December (English)
- 5th December (local language)
These radio discussions focus on the needs and rights of persons with disabilities, especially the elderly, helping to inform the wider community and promote understanding, respect, and inclusion.
Weaver Nest Early Childhood Development
In Weaver Nest Early Childhood Development (ECD) Teacher Training Institute, Moyo Uganda, tutors and students will participate in an awareness raising program about disability and the need to include persons with disabilities in the community. Messages on placards will be produced advocating for disability rights and a team of students and staff from the Institute will visit a centre for children with disabilities in Moyo to participate in the day’s activities. This will include playing with the children, cleaning the place and interacting with care givers at the centre.
Why This Day Matters
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us of a simple but vital truth: inclusive societies are stronger societies.
By promoting accessibility, supporting community participation, and advocating for equal rights, we can help remove barriers and ensure that persons with disabilities can thrive—socially, economically, and culturally.
At VC, we are honoured to stand alongside our partners in this global movement, working together for a world where every person is valued, heard, and included.
