Teddy Nakidu learned the skills of shoemaking from a friend. When her friend moved away, she continued to make shoes, but on a small scale, just to sell to neighbours. As demand for shoes grew, she was able to earn a living. It was then for the first time that she saw that she could take a big step in her life because previously she had no land or home of her own as money was always limited.
In 2019, Teddy approached her local SACCO and obtained a loan to buy a piece of land and after paying it off, she got a new loan to buy materials and started building her dream home. She is still building it because COVID-19 reduced the shoe market, but now she plans to concentrate on growing the shoe business.
“I am currently working with two young mothers, but I want to recruit more members so that we can produce more shoes and increase our income. I am deeply appreciative of the Caritas project and its donors for their support to our SACCO. “How could I have had a piece of land, let alone build a house of my own?”
