Addressing the Needs of the Elderly in Fort Portal-Western Uganda

Welcome to our series, Discovering VC and Partner Projects:

Embark with us on a journey to explore VC and its meaningful partnerships. Today, we shed light on our collaboration with Bishop Magambo Counsellor Training Institute (BMCTI) in Fort Portal, Uganda. Together, we are dedicated to supporting the elderly and uplifting vulnerable communities in the region.

BMCTI: A Place of Support:

Founded in 2003 by Rev. Dr. Fr. Paschal Kabura, BMCTI was established to train counselors in Uganda. Since then, BMCTI has been crucial in raising awareness about mental health issues and providing counseling services to individuals, families, and communities in the Rwenzori region. BMCTI also conducts training on topics like communication skills, domestic violence, teenage motherhood, and sexual harassment in schools. Today, BMCTI is part of the Uganda Martyrs University Fort Portal Campus in Uganda.

VC and BMCTI Partnership:

The partnership between VC and BMCTI began in 2012 when the organizations connected during a visit to Uganda. This collaboration involves deploying volunteers with specialized skills and experience to achieve project goals.

Addressing Elderly Needs:

Through their work in Fort Portal, BMCTI identified the need for psychosocial support for the elderly, a vulnerable group often neglected emotionally, physically, and mentally. BMCTI incorporated activities like psychosocial support, surveys, community awareness programmes, human rights advocacy, mentoring local staff, and involving counseling students to provide services. These initiatives have improved the well-being of the elderly.

Decision-Making and Participation:

BMCTI operates under a Board of Governors with diverse backgrounds and meets quarterly to discuss important matters. Strategic decisions involving Uganda Martyrs University’s direction also involve relevant trustees. Local participation is encouraged and represented in decision-making.

Conclusion:

The VC and BMCTI partnership offers hope for Fort Portal’s elderly. By providing training and support, this collaboration aims to restore dignity and well-being among this marginalized group. Together, we advocate for the elderly’s rights and work for a more inclusive world.
